Weekly news: 18th-24th March

 

Monday (18th)

Beginning of the third summit for democracy (S4D) held in Seoul. This forum was held amid global declines in democracy and the resurgence of authoritarian tendencies. Korea, with other participating countries such as the USA, the United Kingdom, Chile, or the Slovak Republic committed to promoting more transparent policies, to engage in the fight against corruption. Such summits and conferences are key events to take action to promote democracy in an era of illiberalism. Also, this event being held in Seoul highlights Korea’s key position in the world as one of the most stable democracies in Asia and a representative of democracy in the region. 


Tuesday (19th)

SK Hynix is the world’s second-largest chips-making company and began the mass production of its latest HBM3E chips. Such chips are essential in AI’s development, and SK Hynix can be said as one of the main AI memory chip providers and is willing to “cement its position as the total AI memory provider” as said by Ryun Sung-soo, SK Hynix’s HBM business head. 


Wednesday (20th)

After launching its new HBM3E chip last month, Samsung Electronics is expected to join SK Hynix as one of Nvidia's suppliers, as the world’s leader in AI is testing the latest Samsung chip. The turning point will be based on whether Samsung chips are reaching Nvidia’s needs and standards. If so, the already competing rivals, SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are going to compete in an additional area. 


Thursday (21st)

Korean Air, the main national air transporter, announced they plan to sign a deal with Airbus to buy new planes of the latest A3500 plane series. More eco-friendly, the planes are set to help the development of Korean Air as a responsible and sustainable company, especially from the perspective of the Asiana Airlines integration. 


Friday (22nd)

KOWEPO (Korea Western Power Co.) co-signed along with EDF (French electric company) a project on solar energy development with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This project will be led by two companies (KOWEPO and EDF) that have been building trust in the region. It is also a partnership that has been ongoing for the past year between the Korean and the French companies and was re-conducted for this project. 


Weekend (23rd-24th)

Seoul was ranked 10th among 133 cities in the Global Financial Centres Index. This index explores the competitiveness of major cities in the World. The credit for this high position has been given to the financial hub of Yeouido, a space that is set to nurture the fintech sector and host foreigners.  Moreover, for the first time, Seoul entered the top 10 fintech center rating replacing Beijing (11th).
