1 - SK, Hanwha, Doosan struggle with protests against restructuring plans 

Major Korean conglomerates face setbacks in governance restructuring amid concerns about favoring controlling shareholders. Hanwha Energy's tender offer for Hanwha Corp. met backlash from minority shareholders, questioning the deal's intention to enhance management. Similarly, Doosan Group and SK Innovation encountered criticism over their merger plans, which allegedly disadvantaged minority shareholders and undervalued their stakes.



2 - Focus shifts to Kamala Harris's ties with Korea as Yoon's trusted partner Biden calls it quits

Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol reserved comment on U.S. President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the presidential race, emphasizing bipartisan support for the Korea-U.S. alliance. Analysts note Yoon's strong relationship with Biden, leading to key diplomatic achievements like the Washington Declaration on nuclear consultations. If Vice President Kamala Harris succeeds Biden, she is expected to maintain a firm stance on alliances and North Korea policy.



3 - South Korea wins 10th consecutive gold in women's archery team event

South Korea won its 10th consecutive Olympic gold in the women's archery team event in Paris, defeating China 5-4 in a dramatic shoot-off. Jeon Hun-young, Nam Su-hyeon, and Lim Si-hyeon extended a winning streak that began in Seoul in 1988. South Korea leads Olympic archery with 28 gold medals and 44 medals overall.



4 - IOC apologizes for 'mistake' during Olympics opening ceremony

The IOC apologized to President Yoon Suk Yeol and South Korea for mistakenly identifying their delegation as representing North Korea during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony. IOC President Thomas Bach apologized in a letter and phone call, describing the incident as an "inexcusable mistake" due to human error. The IOC promised to prevent such errors in the future, with 143 South Korean athletes participating in the Games.



5 - Nexon's First Descendant grabs global gamers' attention

Nexon's new looter shooter, The First Descendant, is maintaining steady popularity, ranking No. 13 on Steam's most-played games chart with 120,000 peak concurrent players in the past 24 hours. Following its July 2 global launch, it quickly topped Steam’s PC chart, achieving a peak concurrent player count of over 260,000 by July 8. Nexon plans continuous updates and new content, including heroes and major expansions, to sustain the game's momentum.



6 - The Culture Ministry highlights traditional Korean culture in the Paris exhibition

An exhibition titled “That’s Korea: The Shape of Time” is at Maison de la Chimie in Paris from Thursday to Aug. 11. Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for the 2024 Paris Olympics, it showcases hanbok, hanji, and soban among works from 17 artists. The exhibition explores the evolution of Korean traditions in three sections.
